Understanding of Parks, Recreation and Tourism
I have included below pieces of coursework that help show the development of my education in this field. Each piece shows a different skill I have acquired through my classes.
Budget- During my last semester of classes, I took a financial management class. During this class we learned the basics of keeping a good budget, and for our final we had to manipulate a mock budget and makes changes to meet projected goals.
Budget Memo- I included the budget memo I sent along with the excel memo, because the memo included my explanation of changes, and required a more professional tone of communication that I feel is important. The excel document required the skills to successfully complete the project, but it is almost meaningless without this document as explanation.
Risk Management Plan- This was a final project for my liability and risk management class. This shows that a lot of thought should be put into the risks associated with any business or activity. This was a very time consuming project because it required an agency analysis with possible risks encountered, risk analysis to determine how severe and frequent each risk was, risk treatment, and case precedents for each risk.
Infographic- This was another final I completed, this time for my international tourism class. This shows my ability to create an infographic which shows my understanding of social media as well as my skills of creating an aesthetically pleasing product combing facts and images. This project used as part of an awareness campaign we had to do for an international problem. I chose to do international travel health and safety, to try to get people to simply give more thought to their safety before leaving on their trip. Sometimes by the time people think of it, it's too late.

Risk Management Plan (16 Step)- During my first semester in the PRT program, we were required to plan an event as a group. I was part of the Risk Management Team, and this is the plan I put together for our final project. We put on the Play Your Way Event which partnered with the Neighborhood House to provide three days of after-school programming for over twenty children. To create the plan I had to rely on my knowledge of emergency procedures, as well as understand the major concerns when working with children. This assignment shows my understanding of risk management and its role in event planning.
Leadership Analysis- In this paper I was required to discuss a leader I admired, and then compare his/her leadership style with my own. I also had to candidly talk about my strengths and shortcomings as a leader. I chose to include this paper because I believe honesty in oneself and abilities is important in the hospitality field. By better understanding my strengths and weaknesses, I can balance my development.
Financial Spreadsheets- During my Entrepreneurial Recreation class, my group was required to create a complete business plan. It was my responsibility to compile the financial data on starting and maintaining our theoretical business, which was a bed and breakfast. To complete the assignment I had to use skills and knowledge I picked up during my Hospitality Accounting class, as well as s basic comprehension of business. These financial spreadsheets were an important piece of our business plan because they are what investors would look at to see if the business was plausible.
Menu Analysis- This is a paper I wrote for my Sales and Marketing class. I chose to include this piece because it shows a different aspect of the courses I have taken. For this assignment I had to analyze a restaurant's menu and discuss its effectiveness in marketing to customers. I liked this assignment because it required skills of observation and analysis to discuss the components of something that is normally overlooked in its significance. It made me appreciate how much work is put into menu planning and design.
